Samsung's DDR5 server memory modules primarily come in the RDIMM (Registered Dual In-line Memory Module) form factor. Compared to the previous DDR4 generation, these modules offer significant improvements in speed, capacity, and energy efficiency. Here are the key technical specifications:

1. Basic Specifications

●       DIMM Type: Primarily RDIMM (Registered DIMM), with some high-capacity models potentially using LRDIMM (Load-Reduced DIMM).

●       Pin Count: 288-pin. While sharing the same physical form factor as DDR4, the electrical interfaces are incompatible.

●       Operating Voltage: 1.1V, a reduction from DDR4's 1.2V, contributing to lower power consumption and reduced heat generation in server environments.

2. Speed and Frequency

●       Data Transfer Rate: Starts at 4800 Mbps (4.8 GT/s). Mainstream products cover a range from 5600 Mbps to 6400 Mbps, with higher speeds available.

●       Equivalent Clock Frequency: Due to the DDR (Double Data Rate) technology, the equivalent clock frequency is half the data transfer rate. For example, a 6400 Mbps module operates at an equivalent frequency of 3200 MHz.

●       Bandwidth: A 6400 Mbps module, for instance, offers a theoretical peak bandwidth of PC5-44800, approximately 44.8 GB/s.

3. Capacity and Density

●       Module Capacity: Single RDIMM modules are available in various capacities, including 32GB, 48GB, 64GB, 96GB, 128GB, and 256GB.

●       DRAM Chip Density: Samsung has mass-produced high-density 24Gb (3GB) and 48Gb (6GB) DDR5 DRAM chips, which are fundamental to achieving these high module capacities.

4. Timing Parameters

DDR5 timing parameters differ significantly from DDR4. Samsung's DDR5 server memory modules (e.g., 5600 and 6400 Mbps models) commonly feature a CL46 timing configuration. It's important to note that due to the different base frequencies, the CAS Latency (CL) value of DDR5 cannot be directly compared to that of DDR4.

5. Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability (RAS) Features

●       ECC (Error-Correcting Code): All server memory modules include ECC functionality, which automatically detects and corrects single-bit memory errors, ensuring data integrity.

●       On-Die ECC (片上 ECC): The DDR5 standard incorporates On-Die ECC, providing an additional layer of data protection within each DRAM chip itself.

●       Advanced Redundancy: Some high-end models support features like Rank mirroring and global spare, further enhancing server reliability and serviceability.

6. Compatibility and Standards

Samsung DDR5 server memory modules comply with JEDEC international standards, ensuring compatibility with mainstream server platforms, such as those based on Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC processors.
